Avro Vulcan
XL445
Designed as a strategic nuclear bomber, the Avro Vulcan spearheaded Britain’s nuclear bomber deterrent throughout the Cold War. Armed with standoff thermonuclear missiles, the Vulcan’s mission was to launch a nuclear strike from beyond the range of enemy defences.
Vulcan XL445 first entered service with 27 Squadron RAF on 26th November 1962, serving with the Scampton, Waddington and Cottesmore wing until January 1969 when it transferred to the Akrotiri wing in Cyprus. Returning to England in January 1975, XL 445 served with 35 and 44 Squadrons until in May 1982, in response to the urgent requirements of the Falklands War it was converted to tanker duty.
In 1991 XL445 was salvaged and it is from a section of the aircraft’s bomb doors that the centrepieces of these cufflinks are made.
